There is an exemption in the Veterinarians Act which permits an owner to treat their own animals. Therefore, it is legal for this person to vaccinate the animals while she is still the owner (in possession of them, not “paper” ownership, where the animal is taken home by someone else, but the “ownership” remains with the adopter). She cannot vaccinate animals which have already been adopted and taken home, and she cannot vaccinate for rabies (this is a federal offence).

It seems that Melitta has been at this for a very long time and there is little hope of putting a stop to her. And here I thought that people who worked with animals and animal rescues were a notch above all these terrible goings on. I am appauled that the Humane Societies are still providing her with animials and wonder if there is anything that can be done at all.
ReplyDeleteI dealt with her several years ago when I spoke to her about a dog I saw on her site. I had just lot my beautiful dog who I lived with for more than 12 years and wanted another small female.
She called me and told me that there was a Llasa Apso whose parents gave her up because their daughter went off to college and didn't have time for her anymore.
I drove to Oshawa, met Daisy and took her right away.
A short time later, Melitta called me telling me she had another Llasa Apso but a boy this time. It seems he was found wandering the street by the Oshawa Humane Society and was thought to be a biter so was going to be put down. Instead, Melitta took him, she said.
She said she brought him to the vet and he had ear mites as well as crystals in his bladder and needed surgery. I hadn't even seen the dog but agreed to this surgery as well as having him neutered at the same time, telling her I would need a receipt.
The time came about 10 days later that Benji was ready to be picked up and I drove out to Oshawa again to pick him up and pay her for the vet bill which I agreed to pay for.
She wanted $800.00 and I handed it over, as well as the 'fee' for adoption. When I pressed her for a receipt she said she had to go back to the vet as she forgot to ask for it and would send it to me once she got it.
Long story about phone calls etc., but needless to say, I never got the bill.
Furthermore, Benji's ears were chronically infected and he peed all over the house all the time. I tried to train him and endured and compensated by letting him out several times each day but there were still accidents all the time.
Fast forward more than 6 years. I still have both Daisy and Benji although they are getting on and have serious problems due to natural age progression. I love them both so much and dread the day I will have to decide.
However, Benji had developed arthritis in his hips and a kidney problem and off to the vet's again. I mentioned the crystals and surgery during the exam. He had to have X-rays and guess what? He had never had any previous surgery other than having him neutered. His situation now is that he has kidney stones and has severe kidney problems.
I now know, given my experience with this kind of thing that even had he had surgery way back then, it would have been impossible for it to only have cost $800 as kidney surgery runs in the thousands, not hundreds of dollars.
So, I suppose Melitta saw a 'mark' - someone who didn't really know what it would cost and decided to get a little extra 'commission' for herself.
I have no idea if any of the stories she told me are true or not. I do know that her house was a mess with large dogs all over the place, vying for position and dominance.
The last time I was there, a dog called Princess had just been killed by 2 dogs in the backyard. She said they had been 'after' her for some time but she had no idea they would actually kill her.
What?
I do hope something can finally be done to close this woman down. She is a curse to all of us who love dogs and believe in being better human beings than she and her daughter are exhibiting.
I cant belie you are talking such crap you wanted the other dog you said you did not care about the price to fix him some people i thought you were a nice lady when you adopted those two dog with your fancy car i gave you the recite as well you need it for taxes or some crap you are so full of it. i know who you are and thanks for the talking crap about me., and my dogs,yet you had no trouble and you email and call ME for the other dog..why do you tell such lies..

ya real good work Nat, you and your liar friends do need real job, and you have no idea about caring for dogs and cats ,and I like them so much better then you and the rest of the people who believe you.,..I will always care for animals and no one will stop me nor have I ever had any removed from me EVER.,once again facts get them straight., and., sue me for what your fault you did not let me know the dogs were sick..you signed and contract which is why you can not sue me you are at fault., and all you do is hurt the animals., not me people are tired of all your crap and the people that talk crap like you .I don't want to adopt my dogs to them any way. GROW UP ALL READY>>>>...and leave my dogs alone..

OH YES! They researched you and the warrant out for your arrest and stopped letting you promote your "rescue". So you have resorted to starting your own website!!
