  2. Hello Nats: (SEE END OF COMMENT FOR MY EMAIL ADDRESS PLEASE CONTACT ME RE MELITA AND SOME IDEAS I HAVE FOR YOU - TOO LONG FOR HERE AND THIS COMMENT IS LONG AS IT HAS LOTS OF INFO IN IT. And yes, this Melita is a real character all right and needs to be stopped.
Regarding Melita giving the pups shots. Its is illegal as far as I am aware for owners/breeders to give their dogs shots - this is the job and the territory of veterinarians and anyone doing so is in contravention of the licensing for veterinarians and the standard of medical practice for veterinarians. I suggest that you get hold of the College in regards to Melita giving the dogs vaccinations. I don't know where you are located but found you on Kijiji Oshawa so I am assuming you are in Ontario - if not then your provincial, state or federal veterinarian licensing body can assistyou with this. Giving shots is the eqivalent of practising veterinary medicine without a license and is strictly enforced by the regulatory bodies. And how does she procure the vaccines, how do you know they are within date? Far as I know only licensed vets can buy vaccines. Second, why giving leptospirosis at that age and when it might not even be necessary (of course if ther is feces in her house I can see why the precaution but at that age??. I have ran into so many unscruplous people during my years working as an Animal Herbalist specializing in Dogs and Horses and it is illegal for anyone but a veterinarian to give vaccinations and provide vaccination documentation. If you are still after Melita I encourage you to contact the Ontario College Of Veterinary Medicine and report her for this activity.
Another note on the condition of her house - any time someone is purchasing a dog it is within your rights to ask to see where the dog is living. Their quarters should be clean and smell clean; ample fresh water should be supplied and a seperate area for bedding as well. The area itself (rest of the house) should reflect the same standard of cleanliness - unfortunatley unless a puppy mill is in operation, regardless of how filthy conditions are, most humane societies will not get involved as long as the animal is not obviously abused, has food and water and shelter. This is okay to a certain extent but reflects how far the legislation has to go in order to make sure that animals are living with decent care. Filthy couches and dirt all over the place is not a positive sign to begin with - anyone sloppy with the pups environment is going to take even less care of the animal. This is my experience speaking (12 years full time).
Obiously this story of yours brings much to mind in regards anyone choosing a dog regardless of where they get one. First of all, pups general appearance/behavious should be bright-eyed and curious. Pups that hide or are shy may have either behavioural issues (hard to say when they are so young - not usual in pups) or they are sick. Dull, staring coat, clammy noses, running noses, eyes with gook in them, dirty ears, obvious signs of fleas/ticks/lice check coats especially around ears, genitals, armpits - favourite hiding places for critters. Also check that genitals are free of any kind of exudate, check pups ribs and tummy - bulging tummy and thin pup can indicate worm infestation which is not uncommon; many pups get them inutero from the female - all pups should be wormed for round and pinworms (check package for ages) by the time they are 6-8 weeks. I would also ask to see some of their poop by taking them outside to observe if they have any difficulty urinating or defecating. Pups who are healthy should have normal poops just like adult dogs - runny poops either indicate illness or a too rapid change of food. Another thing to check is pup's skin, run your thumb against the hair and check to see that skin is clean without dandruff or greasiness - this again is a sign of poor condition; any sneezing, rubbing of eyes, rubbing face on floor, scratching at ears, eyes, nose, or rubbing same on floor could indicate distemper, or skin mites (almost impossible to see with the naked eye) demodictic (sp) mange is common in filthy kennel conditions - i.e puppy mills, backyard breeders. The mites can severely compromise dogs health. You mention Parvo as almost claiming one of your lovely pups Molson (I'm so glad you caught it in time even though your vets were a little incompetent losing lab results and not following up without you asking - shame on them- there is also danger of Kennel cough and canine distemper. Here for your info is a general vaccination schedule for dogs - at 6 to 8 weeks – Distemper, Hepatitis (CAV-2) Parainfluenza (Kennel Cough) Parvovirus

12 weeks – second set of shots for same as above – all needles listed

16 weeks – third set and final set of shots for above and first rabies vaccine

1 Year – Rabies booster shot – good for at least 3 years – most vets don’t vaccinate against Rabies on an annual basis anymore and some don’t vaccinate again unless the dog’s rabies titer is low (not many anti-bodies which is checked with a blood-test).
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING DISEASE DESCRIPTIONS (Good to be aware of symptoms in case you ever get a sick puppy in your care – if they are sick, they should be immediately quarantined from your dogs and taken to the emergency vets.
You might also want to consider taking a contract with you stating that in the event you find that the dog has an illness that the seller warrants the dog has been treated for, that they are responsible for all and any veterinarian costs that are incurred as a result of the need for treatment - any honest seller that stands behind their care of the dogs will not hesitate to sign. If they do - beware and ask for proof - a good adage to go by is wait 24 hours before you make the decision to take the dog home thereby giving the seller time to get proof together for you - the dog isn't going to disappear overnight and this gives you more time to check with a vet if you noticed things you wish to discuss with an uninvolved 3rd party. Most vets will not hesitate to help you over the phone if you advise you are considering buying a pup - also you can call Humane Society for same info. That also gives you time to review before you act on the emotional impetus to take the dog home right away. Its a short time out for everyone to review and consoldiate their position and a good seller will graciously allow you that option without selling the dog to someone else if they know you are serious - a small deposit (no more than 10% asking price) should suffice to hold the animal for 24 to 48 hours.
    CANINE DISEASES

Distemper – A widespread and often fatal disease which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia and neurological problems.

Parvovirus (CPV) A highly contagious and potentially fatal disease which may cause severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea. It is especially dangerous in young dogs, but all unvaccinated dogs are at risk of contracting this severe disease regardless of age.

Coronavirus (CCV – A contagious viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract which causes vomiting and diarrhea. Puppies are particularly susceptible to this disease and depending on where the dog originally came from this might be a vaccine worth considering. Ask the vet about risk in the Oshawa area (incidence is low here I think its more of a southern problem)

Kennel Cough – An extremely contagious infection of the upper respiratory tract that is characterized by a persistent dry, hacking cough. contributing infectious agents include adenovirus (CAV-2), parainfluenza (CPI), distemper (CDV) and the bacterial Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Hepatitis – (CAV-1) An adenovirus disease which may lead to severe damage of the liver, kidneys, spleen and lungs

Leptospirosis – A bacterial infection that can lead to permanent kidney and liver damage. It is contagious to all mammals including humans and dogs and is spread through contact with infected urine or contaminated soil or water.

Rabies – A fatal viral infection of the central nervous system that can affect all mammals, including humans. The virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal. Routine vaccination is key to controlling this nasty bugger. I recall that about 12 (or more) years ago that Rabies was so prevalent in the local area due to a new, more virulent strain carried by Raccoons, that the Ministry of Natural Resources engaged in a wildlife baiting vaccine program for foxes and raccoons in Durham and adjacent regions. It was successful and brought the Rabies outbreak under control.

  4. Maybe you need to start a petition to shut this rescue down! Glad to see someone taking action with these puppy brokers claiming to be rescue organizations. The thing is you gave her a heads up in time to get ready for an inspection by the SPCA.

  7. She has an arrest warrant out on animal cruetly charges in NY State, I have confirmed this myself.....yet the laws are so horrible here that the cops haven't done anything (yet).

Thank god she was finally taken off of PETFINDER.COM

Who adopts puppies out for $300 a piece????? yeah, not trying to make profit at all!

    Get a real job Melita

PS How many times have you moved around because of complaints???? One of your previous landlords complained to the city of Oshawa council because you trashed his rental house with all the animals you had in there and then refused to move out! According to Animal Control there is a legal limit to how many animals you can have at one time!

  8. Dear Council Members,
I am a landlord in Oshawa with a single detached renta propert house at 254 Bruce St.
I have a very diffcult tenat there who rus an ilegal dog shelter and routinely has up to
20 dogs in the house. The city of Oshawa bylaw offcers ate well aware of this but say
that they canot stop ths ilegal activity as they canot enter the house without the
tenat's permssion for inspection and evidence gathering. Frieda Balsdon, bylaw
offcer, also stated that the tenant is breakg at least 2 bylaws:
    1. Caring on a business that the area is not zoned for
    2. Keeping more th 3 dogs in a household
She said, however, that the city is not wiling to proceed legally agaist these bylaw
inctions because of the little chance of wiing the case because of the followig:
    1. The city canot obtan evidence of ilegal business as they have to ask the
. unwillin tenant to enter the propert
    2. The tenant has indicated to the bylaw offcers that she ha only 3 dogs licensed by
her in the propert, all the others are visiting temporarly, which is allowed under
the curent bylaw on possession of dogs.
On May i st,2006, I gave notice to the tenant that I needed possession of the propert and
gave her 60 days notice of termination. On May 29th, 2006, I received an order from the
City of Oshawa to clear the propert of refuse and unplated cars, put there by the tenant.
I contacted the bylaw offcer, Grahai Wight, and told him tht I was in the process of
evicting ths tenant and that upon her leaving, I would do any cleanng up that the city
deemed necessa. I told hi that I do not like to visit the propert, as I fear for my
    1.
safety due to the presence of20-some dogs, some of which are usualy pit bulls. He told
me to keep hi posted as the eviction proceeded. On June 30th, the termnation date, the
tenant ha not moved and in fact is still in the propert as oftoday, July 19th. I have
obtained an order from the Ontao Rental Housing Tribunal to order the sheriff to evict
her if she is not moved by July 24th. I intend to do ths on July 24th.
In the interim, however, I was inormed by bylaw offcer Frieda Balsdon that a clean-up
ha been done by the city, at signficant expense, and would be charged to me. I expect
ths bil to be at least $1000. 11s cleanup was done even though the bylaw offcers knew
that it was diffcult for me to clean up the propert, or even attend the propert, with 20
potentially dangerous dogs at that addrss. Both offcers Wight and Balsdon knew that I
was going thr with the eviction process but ordered the cleanup anyway, at my expense.
I feel that the city should be more helpfu to landlords that find themselves with problem
tenats. In ths case I feel I had inormed the offcers of my intentions and am
proceeding to solve the problem by evicting the tenant. 11s I feel, is the only sure way
to solve the problems that ths tenant causes. Cleang up the propert while the tenant
still resides there will only result in more mess being made and another clean up ordered
    and another bil for me.
I request that the bil for the cleanup be covered by the city as I ha acted in good faith by
acting to solve ths problem permanently, th eviction and had inormed the bylaw
offcers of my strtegy, yet they went ahead and ordered the cleanup anyways.
I would appreciate ths letter to be added to the next Council agenda for the meeting of
the 2 i st of August.
    Sincerely,
    j
    Terr Sullivan

  10. Melita, how many times have you moved around???
Why is basically your whole house full of animals??? What is your full time job? Do you drive? Are you on disability too? How much do you charge per dog for adoption fees??? where do all of those puppies come from that you frequantly have..and please don't say they are abandoned on your front porch.
